Ask any educated coach about the top defensive minds in college football and chances are you're going to hear Stanford's Willie Shaw Director of Defense's own Derek Mason's name brought up on multiple occasions.
Hear first hand from his players on what makes coach Mason so effective on the field, and Mason also shares a little about his defensive philosophy.
"Drills are there just to make sure that the motor memory is there. Then what starts to happen is it starts to become second nature." he explains in the clip.
"The philosophy here never changes, but the opponents do, so for us, we just tweak our scheme. So then it becomes scheme, scheme, scheme, and game plan, game plan, game plan and we tweak it to play our opponent, but our philosophy stands to be the same every week."
