There's a lot more to "Georgia Southern 26, Florida 20" than a shocking upset. That win - shocking as it was - was packed full of enough symbolism to suffocate Charles Dickens.
Georgia Southern competed as a re-classifying FBS team, which meant they spent the fall in no man's land between FBS and FCS. The Eagles played an FCS schedule but were not eligible for the FCS playoffs. Their statistics were in their own little corner on the NCAA's FBS page. Nevertheless, Georgia Southern played Georgia Southern football. They rushed for 360 yards per game, the most of any program in FBS and FCS. There are plenty of rumors swirling that Army will look at Jeff Monken as its next head coach, as they should. Monken is 38-16 in four seasons in Statesboro, and has aptly carried the torch ignited by Erk Russell.
So as the Eagles celebrated on Florida Field following their win over the Gators, you really couldn't script a better send-off, in the final game in their final season as FCS members, than to achieve the program's first win over an FBS opponent.
