Western Michigan DC: Half are missing their girlfriends and mommy's meals

First-year Western Michigan defensive coordinator Dave Cohen believes he has inherited some good, young talent on defense.

Cohen interestingly explained, “Now, even though they’re physically talented enough to help us, are they mature enough to grasp the sense of responsibility? I mean, half of them are still missing their girlfriends and missing the poster on their wall at home and mommy’s home-cooked meals. Can they get over the homesickness and be able to transition?”

“How quickly are they going to go from not having the warm fuzzies to playing against a Big Ten power (Sept. 4 at Michigan State). That’s the rush against time.”

Cohen joined Bill Cubit’s coaching staff after serving as the head coach at Hofstra University. After the 2009 season, Hofstra decided to drop football partly due to financial reasons.

Western Michigan will play at Michigan State, Nicholls State, Idaho, and at Notre Dame in non-conference action this season. Phil Steele notes in his preseason magazine that Western Michigan lost 53-0 to Notre Dame in 1919. Glad we were able to get that nugget from Steele!
