Wisconsin-Whitewater wins its fourth Division III championship in five years

Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union met in the Stagg Bowl for the eighth time in nine seasons on Friday night, and Whitewater emerged victorious with a 52-14 blowout victory. This marks the fourth straight victory for Lance Leipold's program in the ongoing Division III clash of the titans; Whitewater now holds a 5-3 edge in the Stagg Bowl series after dropping the first two.

Mount Union entered the game ranked first in Division III in scoring offense (49 points per game) and second in total offense (528.6 yards per game) and passing efficiency (185.01), but Whitewater's top-ranked scoring defense won the night, holding the Purple Raiders to a season-low 14 points and only 348 total yards. The Warhawks' defense held Mount Union quarterback Kevin Burke to 22-of-31 passing for 316 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, and the Mount Union ground game accounted for only 32 yards on 27 carries.

Whitewater quarterback Matt Behrendt connected on 20-of-28 passes for 249 yards with four scores and no picks, and Jordan Ratliffe added 28 rushes for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. After a 21-14 first half, Whitewater took complete control of the game in the second half, posting a 31-0 shutout over the final two frames.

Rebounding from last season's 7-3 finish, Whitewater finishes a season as 15-0 national champions for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Equally amazing, Mount Union has now posted a 71-4 record since the beginning of the 2009 season but has managed to collect only one national championship over the past five seasons. All four losses have come at the hands of Whitewater in the Stagg Bowl.
