Bill Belichick did not get the Washington Commanders head coaching job as widely predicted, but a Belichick could still coach at Washington.
According to a report Friday from ESPN's Field Yates, Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick and Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri are set to interview for defensive positions on Jedd Fisch's Washington staff.
Fisch spent the 2020 season as the Patriots quarterbacks coach, where he worked alongside both Belichick and Sunseri.
Sunseri was a defensive assistant before switching over to running backs. He played safety at Alabama and for the Saints, Patriots and 49ers across three NFL seasons.
Steve Belichick has been with the Patriots since 2012, working exclusively with the defense. He has coached safeties and outside linebackers while also calling plays, despite never carrying a defensive coordinator title.
Belichick joining the staff would be ironic given Brennan Carroll, son of Pete, joined Fisch from Arizona as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Washington's staff page lists seven assistants, with openings at defensive coordinator, linebackers and perhaps one more coach on the defensive front or secondary.
As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
