With most of the Boston College offensive staff set, according to reports over the last few days, word is now beginning to circulate that Bill O'Brien has his top defensive target in sight.
Pete Thamel shares tonight that O'Brien is working on a deal to bring a veteran NFL assistant to his staff at Boston College as new defensive coordinator.
Tim Lewis, who has two decades of NFL coaching experience, is working toward a deal to make him the new defensive coordinator, the report adds.
While his last NFL coaching stop was almost a decade ago, at 62 years old Lewis brings NFL defensive coordinator experience with him from two organizations.
From 2000-03, Lewis served as defensive coordinator for the Steelers and landed the defensive coordinator opportunity with the Giants from 2004-06.
Following those two stints, he coached the defensive backfields for the Panthers, Seahawks, Falcons, and 49ers before leaving the NFL at the conclusion of the 2015 season.
He spent a season coordinating a high school defense at Pinecrest Academy (GA) a few seasons later, and in 2019 was named head coach of the Birmingham Iron franchise of the Alliance of American Football.
He's spent the past few seasons coaching in the XFL and USFL, winning the XFL title with the Arlington Renegades as co-defensive coordinator on the staff led by Bob Stoops.
If a deal is able to get done, the opportunity at Boston College would be Lewis' first coaching opportunity in college football since he coached the defensive backs at Pitt in 1994.
