Bowling Green hires Mike Jinks as head coach (Featured)

Bowling Green has hired Mike Jinks as its new head coach, the program announced Tuesday night.

Jinks comes to Bowling Green from Texas Tech, where he served as the Red Raiders' running backs coach for the past three seasons. He was promoted to associate head coach in January. Jinks helped Texas Tech produce its first 1,000-yard rusher in more than a decade in 2014, and in 2015 star pupil DeAndre Washington led the Big 12 in rushing with 1,455 yards.

Texas Tech was Jinks' first college job. Prior to joining Kliff Kingsbury's staff, Jinks spent a decade rising through the Texas high school ranks, the last seven years as the head coach at Cibolo Steele in the San Antonio area.

So, for those counting, Jinks rose from a Texas high school head coach to a MAC head coach in the span of four years.

The move was a surprise to the college football community, up to an including Bowling Geen's own staff, who apparently did not have a chance to draw up a press release before announcing the hire.

With the move, only BYU, East Carolina, Tulane and Louisiana-Monroe remain open at the FBS level.
