BREAKING: Texas keys in on top Notre Dame assistant coach (Alabama)

Notre Dame gains and Notre Dame is on the precipice of losing key staff member.

The Fighting Irish earlier Friday added star defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman from Cincinnati to replace previous defensive signal-caller Clark Lea, who last month accepted the head coaching post at his alma mater Vanderbilt.

Now Notre Dame is losing its defensive passing game coordinator and arguably its ace recruiter, Terry Joseph, to Steve Sarkisian's University of Texas staff.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop Friday night that Joseph has accepted and begun telling people that he will join Sarkisian's inaugural Longhorns staff.

Joseph had been considered an in-house candidate for the Notre Dame defensive coordinator job, along with fellow veteran Irish assistant and defensive line coach Mike Elston, who has emerged as a candidate for the vacant defensive coordinator job at Purdue.

Sarkisian has made a number of key hires this week to his fledgling Texas staff, after Sarkisian formally accepted the job last Saturday following Texas' firing of incumbent coach Tom Herman. Sarkisian already has added former Akron offensive coordinator and most recently Alabama offensive analyst AJ Milwee to his Horns offensive staff in addition to also securing Blake Gideon, a former Texas icon and special teams ace.

Sarkisian's working to finalize his staff shortly after Monday's College Football Playoffs title game between top-ranked Alabama, which has Sarkisian leading its record-setting offense, and third-ranked Ohio State.

Joseph has been a key member for the Irish coaching staff the past three seasons, two of which resulted in Notre Dame making trips to the College Football Playoffs. A Louisiana native, Joseph also has key experience recruiting in Texas from his stops at Texas A&M, Nebraska and Louisiana Tech.

Notre Dame still has Mike Mickens in its defensive back-end. A former player for Brian Kelly and in the NFL, Mickens is likewise a highly regarded young coach who's known for his detailed work with cornerbacks as a former standout corner himself.

Texas had set its sights at the top of the college football coaching profession for its back-end hire under Sarkisian, targeting Corey Raymond of LSU and Joseph, among others.
