Castleton stays in-house with new head coach choice (VTSU Castleton)

After a month as the team's interim head coach VTSU Castleton (D-III - VT) has decided to move forward with Tyler Higley as the team's new head coach.

He replaces Volpone, who stepped down from the post at the conclusion of the academic year after a decade as head coach.

Higley was the logical choice to take on the head coaching duties, as a former standout defensive back for the program that immediately started his coaching career at Castleton as a volunteer assistant and then graduate assistant.

He left briefly to take on a coordinator role at Western New England, where he directed the special teams units before returning to his alma mater in 2022.

Higley spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator, leading the league in fewest points allowed per game in 2022 and fewest yards per game allowed last fall.

The defense ranked among the top 25 nationally at the Division III level in sacks and TFLs last season as well under Higley's guidance.

His debut game as head coach will be in a rivalry game, and Castleton is set to face in-state rival Norwich (D-III - VT) in The Battle for the Maple Sap Bucket Trophy on September 7th at Norwich.
