The Los Angeles Chargers are cleaning house following a historic loss Thursday night to the Las Vegas Raiders, firing both head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco, the team announced Friday.
The move comes a day after the Bolts dropped a 63-21 decision that truly wasn't as close as the final score. The Chargers trailed 42-0 at the half and 63-7 early in the fourth quarter; the game also came four days after Las Vegas lost 3-0 to Minnesota.
The loss dropped the Chargers to 5-9 on the season and 24-24 under Staley.
A Division III assistant coach as recently as 2016, Staley made a quick rise from NFL position coach, to coordinator, to head coach, but his tenure was marked by historic losses.
The Chargers lost a win-or-stay home game to the Raiders in Week 18 of the 2021 season, and then lost a Wild Card game in which they led 27-0 to the Jaguars back in January.
The Spanos family has owned the Chargers since 1984, a 40-season stretch that has seen the franchise win one AFC championship, win eight playoff games (two in the past 15 seasons), and post 17 losing seasons. Staley's replacement will be the club's fourth head coach in nine seasons.
