Signing Day 2.0 has now come and gone and, with the best recruiting class in school history -- five 5-stars and a No. 3 overall ranking -- Clemson will now buckle down on its hunt for its third national championship in five seasons.
That hunt begins with some housekeeping items, as the Clemson Board of Trustees' compensation committee approved raises and promotions for Dabo Swinney's staff.
With Jeff Scott installed as South Florida's head coach, Tony Elliott will now be Clemson's sole offensive coordinator, and as such his salary has been bumped from $1 million to $1.6 million. (Jeff Scott also earned an even $1 million in 2019.) The raise makes Elliott the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the country based on available figures and the sixth-highest among all assistants. Alabama's Steve Sarkisian earned $1.55 million in 2019, making him the closest to Elliott's new salary.
To replace Scott's spot on the staff, Swinney has promoted Tyler Grisham to wide receivers coach.
Grisham played wideout for Clemson from 2005-08 and spent the past six seasons on Clemson's off-the-field staff, three as a graduate assistant and three as an analyst.
“I’m just super excited for Grish,” Swinney said. “There’s never been a guy more prepared to be the receivers coach at Clemson than Tyler Grisham. He had a great four-year career here. Clemson fans certainly loved him. He had a lot of big moments and went on and grinded out a four-year NFL career.
“He’s been back here six years, three as a GA and three in an off-field analyst role. He’s ready and is going to do an unbelievable job for us. It’s been fun for me the last couple weeks being on the road recruiting with him and watching him in that role. He’s going to be special.”
Additionally, Swinney has announced the following promotions and hires:
- Quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter has added a passing game coordinator title
- Defensive tackles coach Todd Bates has been named recruiting coordinator
- Senior offensive assistant Kyle Richardson has been promoted to director of football player development and freshman transition
- Director of football recruiting and external affairs Thad Turnipseed has been promoted to director of football projects and external affairs
- Director of recruiting operations Jordan Sorrells has been promoted to director of football recruiting
- Assistant for offensive player development Cam Aiken has promoted to senior offensive assistant
- JP Losman has been named an offensive analyst
- Chansi Stuckey has been named an offensive player development assistant
In conjunction with his promotion, Bates has netted a raise from $375,000 to $515,000.
