Confident of his potential as a head coach, the iconic Bill Parcells steered Aaron Glenn away from coaching initially (Bill Parcells)

All the top coaches the NFL has ever known are connected by a common thread, according to the iconic Bill Parcells, and that's that all of them are elite evaluators.

So following two years away from the game where he focused on being a great dad, when Aaron Glenn found himself screaming at the TV on fall Sunday and his wife encouraged him to get into coaching, Glenn picked up the phone and called his mentor - Parcells.

At his presser today, Glenn shared the story of picking up the phone to call Parcells and tell him of his desire to get into coaching.

Parcells had seen something in Glenn as a player with the Jets, and suggested a minor detour before wearing a whistle.

"I called Bill Parcells and told him I want to coach, but he said 'No you're not going to coach, you're going to scout.' I told him I don't want to scout, and he said 'Well that's what you're going to do because I think you have a chance to be a head coach and the best head coaches are really the best evaluators."

"So I took his advice, and it's probably the best advice I've had since coming back into this league. Understanding how to do it from an in-house perspective, and then actually going on the road to be a college scout and to be able to evaluate every position, it helped me tremendously to be in this position."

Fans of the Detroit Lions saw Glenn's background as a scout in action in Detroit the last several years, but especially this past season as their defensive roster was plagued with significant injuries, but were able to find the right pieces time after time to continue the best run in franchise history.

Pretty cool to hear how that phone call impacted the trajectory of his career, and how the opinion of his biggest coaching mentor has come to fruition.
