The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots got younger at key staff positions this winter, but the Dallas Cowboys are apparently looking to get older.
After losing 53-year-old Dan Quinn to the Washington Commanders, the Cowboys interviewed 67-year-old Mike Zimmer and 62-year-old Ron Rivera for their defensive coordinator position on Monday and Tuesday according to the Dallas Morning News, and on Wednesday the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported 61-year-old Rex Ryan will interview as well. (Defensive line coach Aden Durde, a spry 44, is also a candidate for the position.)
Head coach Mike McCarthy, 60, will coach the 2024 season under the final year of his 5-year contract, and so the Cowboys are apparently betting on experience in what will be yet another make-or-break year for the franchise.
The issue may not be the above trio's age so much as that it's simply been a long time since any of them called plays.
Zimmer hasn't been a defensive coordinator since 2013; Rivera since 2010; and Ryan hasn't coached at all since 2016, and last ran a defense in 2008.
Needless to say, the game has changed a lot since then.
The Morning News reported Wednesday that at least one more interview is expected. Here's betting he'll be in his 60s.
