Deion Sanders: A lot of coaches lie (Colorado)

Deion Sanders has a pretty straightforward take as to why there aren't more two-way players across college football.

"A lot of coaches lie," Sanders said Saturday, "and they tell them I'm going to give you the opportunity to play both sides of the ball and we never see it.

"First of all, I don't lie. Second of all, I did it. So, I know it's doable. I know it can be allowed if a young man has that type of talent."

Sanders, who played both wideout and defensive back during a Pro Football Hall of Fame career, has one of the sport's most transcendent two-way stars in Travis Hunter.

All Hunter did Saturday in Colorado's 49-24 win against Utah was catch five passes for 55 yards, notch three tackles, break up a pass and record an interception that he returned 21 yards.

But Deion Sanders, whose team is positioned on any given gameday to have three players on both sides of the ball, said Hunter first earned the right to play both sides of the football when Hunter proved he was a dominant defensive player.

"High school and college now ... some of these guys, you were like that in high school but you ain't like that in college," Coach Prime said. "You really need to focus on one thing. ...

"Travis is Travis. So, yeah, we attract guys that could possibly play both ways. If they can handle it, I'll give them the opportunity. But you got to be great at something, first. You can't be average at offense and average at defense. Dominate something first, then I'll allow you to get on the other side of the ball."

While Sanders is happy to discuss Hunter as the best player in college football, he will not campaign for Hunter's Heisman Trophy candidacy.

"We ain’t petitioning for nobody, we ain’t doing that," Sanders said. "We got a wonderful display of cameras here and I’m pretty sure we’re on national television every week.

"Don’t allow their hatred for me to interfere with our kids’ success. They gotta stop that. Y’all gotta stop that. Give the kids what they deserve."
