Deion Sanders lands highest-rated commit yet: his son (recruiting)

Recruiting experts long expected Shedeur Sanders to join his father's first recruiting class at Jackson State, and on Friday it became official.

"I couldn't pass up an opportunity to help level the playing field & pursue equality for HBCU's," Shedeur Sanders wrote on Twitter. "Dad I got your back!"

The younger Sanders had been a member of Florida Atlantic's recruiting class since July. He plays quarterback at Cedar Hill Trinity Christian in the Dallas area, where Deion serves as offensive coordinator.

It's hard to state anything definitively about SWAC recruiting, but Shedeur Sanders has to rank among the highest-recruited players in conference history -- if not the highest. Standing 6-foot-1 and 198 pounds, Sanders is rated the No. 14 pro-style quarterback and No. 229 overall recruit in the 247Sports composite ratings.

Sanders led Trinity Christian to TAPPS state championships as a freshman, sophomore and junior, accounting for 134 total touchdowns along the way. Trinity Christian is playing an independent schedule this season, which concludes Nov. 28.

With Shedeur on board, the question is not if Coach Prime will start his son, but when. The Tigers' leading returning quarterback is Jalon Jones, who went 54-of-111 for 882 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games last season.

Shedeur Sanders was not the only recruit to join Jackson State's 2021 class on Friday. The Tigers also landed the commitment of Herman Smith, a 3-star athlete out of San Diego. Smith was previously committed to San Diego State and claims offers from Boston College, Fresno State and Hawai'i, among others.

With five commits, all of whom committed Oct. 5 or later, Jackson State's class is rated the highest in the SWAC and sixth among all FCS schools, according to 247.
