The very public search for the new head coach of the Vols that started with a proposal to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, and ended with the Vols hiring Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt needs no recap.
However, new details emerged today via an open records request by GoVols247 detailing the proposed deal with Schiano that is of interest.
According to 247:
The length of Tennessee's proposed deal with Schiano was for six seasons through Jan. 31, 2024, and the former coach at Rutgers and of the NFL's Tampa Bay Bucs would have earned a starting base salary of $4.4 million with a built-in raise of $50,000 each year.
Because the memorandum of understanding was not signed by the chancellor and chief financial officer, the deal was not binding.
We surely haven't heard the last of this, as court cases are sure to drag out seeking reparations.
Interestingly enough, Pruitt's deal is for six years and worth $3.8 million annually, with various incentives built in for reaching the CFB Playoff title game ($400k), CFB Playoff ($300k), and also for a top-five finish in the AP, coaches, or CFP poll ($150k), among others, as SEC Country points out.
