Howard Payne is looking for a head coach after Braxton Harris stepped down on Monday.
“We are thankful for Coach Harris’ leadership and elevating the status of the HPU football program,” HPU athletic director Hunter Sims said. “We wish him lots of success in the future.”
Howard Payne is a Division III school in Brownwood, Texas. The Yellow Jackets compete in the American Southwest Conference.
Harris was on the job for three seasons. Upon inheriting a program that went 1-19 in the two seasons prior to his hiring, HPU went 1-9 in Harris's first season before breaking through with a 5-5 campaign in 2019. The Jackets won the final three games of last season.
Texas Footballreported Harris is leaving to join an FCS staff.
The timing is especially tough for Howard Payne. The Yellow Jackets will report back to campus on Jan. 7 and hold their first practice two days later.
HPU kicks off its season Feb. 6 against Texas Lutheran.
