Dowell Loggains leaves South Carolina for Appalachian State head coaching job (South Carolina)

From 2008 through the 2020 season, Dowell Loggains had logged stops in the NFL in roles ranging from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

2021 marked his first foray into college football, landing as the tight ends coach at Arkansas for two seasons.

When Shane Beamer found himself with an offensive coordinator opening at South Carolina, he brought in the NFL veteran to bring his smashmouth style to the Gamecocks.

After a rough first five games or so, the Gamecocks found their stride and found a way to finish 9-3, on the 12-team playoff bubble, and one of the top rushing attacks in the SEC.

Now, after two seasons in the SEC, Loggains is getting an opportunity to become an FBS head coach.

Appalachian State has tabbed Loggains as their new head coach.

A first-time head coach at any level, Loggains has signed a five-year deal, running through the 2029 season.

At App State, he takes over for Shawn Clark, who was let go after compiling a 40-24 record in five full seasons. Clark put together three seasons of at least 9-wins and also has a 10-win season in 2021 to his credit, but the Mountaineers finished a disappointing 5-6 in this past fall.

Loggains is now the leader of one of the top Group of Five programs with a rich tradition, elite location, and outstanding resources at his disposal.

For South Carolina, it means Shane Beamer is on the hunt for his third offensive coordinator in four seasons (Marcus Satterfield, then Loggains).
