It may seem like an eternity ago, but it was actually just over a decade ago on November 6, 2011 that the SEC formally announced the addition of Missouri as their 14th member.
Unlike some of the most recent realignment moves we've seen over the last week, Missouri's move was one that made as much sense geographically as it did financially, and now Missouri feels like such a natural part of the SEC that many may struggle to remember them as Big 12 members prior to the move.
With moves like USC and UCLA to the Big Ten, and now Washington and Oregon joining them, as well as Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big 12 it's as clear as ever that Coach Prime was right, this bout of realignment is about one thing - "chasing the bag."
Over the weekend, Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz (who took over the Tigers well after their much less controversial realignment) called out the hypocrisy of "the adults in the room" who put a timeline on the transfer portal, but allow themselves to make multi-million dollar decisions whenever they want.
His perspective is a very valid one needs to be heard, regardless of your personal thoughts on realignment.
"My question is, did we count the cost? I'm not talking about the financial cost, I'm talking about did we count the cost for the student athletes involved in this decision."
"What cost is it to those student athletes? We're talking about a football decision that they based off football, but what about softball and baseball who have to travel across the country. Do we ask about the cost of them?"
"Do we know the number one indicator of mental health is? It's lack of rest and sleep. Traveling in those baseball and softball games. Those people, they travel commercial. They get done playing at four, they gotta go to the airport and come back, it's three or four in the morning [when they get home], and now they've gotta go to class."
"Did we ask any of them?"
"I don't worry at all about the game. Football is strong. Football is going to be fine. We will all figure it out. But did we consider the people we are entrusted with? Did we consider the student athlete?"
