After retiring from the head coaching job at San Diego State, Rocky long wasn't willing to say he was done coaching - he was just done with being a head coach.
Today, New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales announced that Long was joining his staff as defensive coordinator via Twitter. Gonzales worked under Long at New Mexico and served as his defensive coordinator at San Diego State before leaving for the Arizona State defensive coordinator position in 2018.
Rocky went 65-69 as the head coach at New Mexico from 1998-2008 and is the winningest head coach in program history.
Before officially stepping down and handing the reigns of the SDSU program to Brady Hoke, Long talked with Syracuse about their defensive coordinator opening. He also noted at his retirement presser that he had no intentions of staying away from the sideline, even offering to coach the local high school's freshman team if they'd have him.
Now he returns to the sideline at his alma mater and familiar territory to help his former coordinator get the program turned around.
