Georgia State has some quality coaches on staff that have been a part of the program for at least seven seasons like offensive coordinator Trent McKnight, as well as accomplished coordinators like former Coastal Carolina defensive coordinator Chad Staggs who just wrapped up his first year with the team that would have made sense to step in as interim head coach following the recent and sudden departure of head coach Shawn Elliott just after they'd started spring ball.
Either one of those guys, or tabbing any of their assistant coaches with head coaching aspirations and great leadership qualities, would have been easy to justify.
Instead, Georgia State has opted for an outside-the-box approach, according to a report.
Bruce Feldman shares that head strength coach Mike Sirignano is being tabbed as the interim head coach.
Following news yesterday that the program was opting to press pause on their spring practices following Elliott's departure, it's a move that makes sense, considering the timing.
While Sirignano has no on-field coaching experience, that really isn't the priority at this point, being a leader of men during this time of transition is the top priority for the program, and this decision reflects that. He has experience at Louisville, App State, as well as some other places as an assistant.
Plugging Sirignano in as the interim head coach while the team transitions back into workouts over football specific work while the head coaching search takes place, followed by staff hires, is a logical move that "keeps the main thing the thing," until some clarity arrives.
Whether the appointment means Georgia State's search is a quick one, or one that drags out for a few weeks, is anyone's guess at this point, but the clock is ticking on getting guys in place and getting spring practices, and a spring game in.
