Greg Mattison spent a few seasons coaching high school football in the 1970's before starting his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Illinois in 1976.
Outside of three seasons with the Ravens, including as the team's defensive coordinator in 2009-10, Mattison spent over four decades in college football, and Ryan Day announced today that his co-defensive coordinator plans to retire at the end fo the month.
Mattison, who won our FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year Award in 2016, is 71 years old and has spent over four decades coaching college football.
He's enjoyed a remarkable career that has seen him coach at some of the top college football programs in the country. He's worked with the defensive lines at Cornell, Northwestern, Western Michigan, Navy, Texas A&M, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida, and Ohio State.
He's also held coordinator titles at many of those stops as well, including Western Michigan, Michigan (twice), Notre Dame, Florida, and Ohio State.
Of the over forty years he's spent in the college ranks, 11 of those seasons have come at Michigan during two different stints. When Ryan Day took the reigns in Columbus with Urban Meyer stepping away, Mattison's did what many of the Wolverines faithful believe to be the unthinkable when he decided to trade the maize and blue for scarlet and gray and left Ann Arbor for their bitter rival to the South. Now he will retire after helping the Buckeyes the past two seasons.
He leaves Columbus with some big shoes to fill and a prime opening on the defensive side of the ball for Day to now fill.
We would all like to wish coach Mattison a happy retirement and the best of luck as he turns the page from football to the next chapter of his life.
