The final Bedlam rivalry for the forseeable future is set to take place on Saturday, as Oklahoma is set to depart the Big 12 for the SEC next fall.
For Mike Gundy, who played in the game as the brash quarterback of the Cowboys from 1986-89 and has gone on to coach in it as a coordinator and now the veteran head coach, it's a game that was quite heated between the two teams for a while.
But now, it's turned into a "lovefest."
“It used to be much different because we used to not like each other. Nowadays, it’s different. It’s a lovefest, right?"
Gundy went on to compare the current state of the rivalry to the admiration NFL players show for each other.
“You ever watch a pro game before the game and all the players are out there hugging each other? The Bears and the Packers are hugging. The Lions, they’re hugging each other talking about who your agent is and your commercials and how much money you’re making?"
“You think Dick Butkus did that? No.”
Reflecting back on when he was a player, Gundy brought up how he and Sooners legendary linebacker Brian Bosworth had spit at each other in the match up at one point.
"It didn't bother me because we didn't have phones and social media, but it was a rivalry then. Bosworth spit in my face and I spit in his. It was actually a rivalry," Gundy shared.
He then launched into a story about going to parties in Oklahoma City back in his college days and running into Bosworth and how he had to be very intentional in how he handled it.
"I had to make a decision in how I was going to handle that. Were we going to have a confrontation? And who was with me, because I could kick them in the shin and then run like hell, but I'm not dumb."
Gundy goes on to share that he believes the two programs will face each other again, most likely in a bowl game pitting the Big 12 against the SEC in what will be a dream bowl match up for some sponsor down the road - especially if it's within a reasonable driving distance for both programs.
