EXCLUSIVE: “Tempo the Center” Philosophy in Buffalo’s Wide Zone Concept:The University at Buffalo led the nation in rushing this season with 287.4 yards per game, the highest rushing output for a non-service academy team since the 2017 season. And while its most efficient run scheme, the wide zone concept, averaged 7.9 yards per carry it’s explosiveness was off the charts, literally. According to Pro Football Focus, UB’s wide zone ranked 2nd nationally in explosive play run rate (10+ yards) and 2nd in yards before contact (3.9 yds) prompting offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki to say it was the best he’s run the play in 16 years. While having the MAC player of the year in RB Jaret Patterson helped, the offensive staff credits how they tweaked the tempo of the play to produce an explosive play rate of over 26%. In an exclusive clinic report with X&O Labs, Coach Kotelnicki and offensive line coach Scott Fuchs explain how they correlate the offensive line and backs to work rhythmically to stretch then puncture the defense. X&O Labs will email this exclusive report next Tuesday to their 60,000 readers—and you can get it sent to your email, too (FREE).
