Please join us in praying for legendary college football coach Howard Schnellenberger, who is recovering after a recent fall.
The fall at his Boynton Beach home resulted in a subdural hematoma which resulted in a hospital stay, but he has since moved to a recovery center.
“Our prayers are for a full and speedy recovery,” wife of 61 years Beverlee Schnellenberger shared in a statement put out by FAU. “Howard has been working with a medical staff that has been my lifeline during a time that doesn’t permit visitation.”
Schnellenberger led Miami to their first national title as their head coach in 1983 after turning around a program that was nearly dropped prior to his arrival in 1979.
He took over the Louisville program in 1985 and went 54-56-2 overall with them through 1994, highlighted by a 10-1-1 season and Fiesta Bowl win in 1990. He spent one season at Oklahoma before suddenly resigning after going 5-5-1.
The sunset years of his coaching career took place as Florida Atlantic decided to launch a football program where he was tasked with helping build the program from scratch in 1998 and when the FAU president asked Howard to go find a coach, he ended up deciding to do it himself. Their first year taking the field in 2001 as a I-AA Independent, Schnellenberger went 4-6, then 2-9 before a jump to 11-3 and 9-3 in years three and four. By year three as a Sun Belt member, the Owls finished tied for first in the league in 2007 and finished 8-5 before a slow slide over the next several years ended with a 1-11 season in 2011. After that season, Schnellenberger announced his retirement.
Again, join us in praying for the recovery of Schnellenberger - a college football icon.
