Connecticut is off to a 1-3 start and stands at 4-12 overall in Randy Edsall's second tenure leading the Huskies.
When you win four times in 16 tries, that's generally regarded as a sign that nothing is going great, but the defense has been an especially big problem. (To be fair, UConn's three losses to date are to UCF, Boise State and Syracuse, all of whom rank among the top 14 in scoring.)
Edsall was asked Tuesday, in the most roundabout way possible, if he planned to move on from defensive coordinator Bill Crocker. He didn't take too kindly to the question.
On Wednesday, Edsall made an unscheduled appearance with the media to state that any problems with the Huskies' program lie with him, not his players or assistants.
In the final four years of his first stint at UConn, from 2007-10, Edsall went 33-19 with a share of two Big East championships. He left for Maryland after the 2010 season, and since then he's collected a record of 26-46.
UConn has played a treacherous schedule so far, but the road doesn't get easier from here, at least not in the near term. The Huskies' next three opponents: 4-0 Cincinnati, 3-1 Memphis and 4-0 South Florida.
