Is the future of college football spring games in jeopardy? (college football)

Deion Sanders wanted to put on a show.

But first, Colorado officials had to remove ... the snow.

That was the scene in spring 2023 as Sanders unveiled his inaugural Colorado Buffaloes squad to a national TV audience on ESPN.

It was Colorado's annual end-of-spring exhibition, and the Buffaloes, with Coach Prime at the helm, were considered must-see viewing.

Fans in Boulder, Colorado, flocked to the exhibitions; the Buffs announced a combined 75,000 in attendance for the first two spring games under Sanders.

After all, aside from the repeated attempts to revive spring "pro" leagues such as the XFL and USFL, America faced no real football from post-Super Bowl until late August when the next college football season kicked off.

Now? Now, Matt Rhule already has decreed that Nebraska will not have a spring game.

Other programs have indicated they are weighing the future of such events.

Oh, and not so coincidentally, the next NCAA Transfer Portal window runs April 16-25.

Many coaches would prefer those spring games not be yet an additional factor in driving players into the Portal.

Players are smart; they know if their future is legitimately bright in a current situation, if there's.a pathway to playing time; they know if it's time to seek payment and PT elsewhere.
