John Bonamego has been relieved of duties as head coach at Central Michigan, the program announced Friday evening.
"Making a leadership change is a difficult decision, especially when you know that coach has given his all to CMU," AD Michael Alford said. "After conducting a 360-degree evaluation of the program, it was clear that a change is needed if we are going to compete for and win championships. We greatly appreciate all that John has done for his alma mater and wish him the best moving forward."
Hired away from the Detroit Lions' special teams coordinator job, Bonamego was 22-29 in four seasons at CMU. He led the Chippewas to an 8-5 mark and 6-2 record in MAC play, but the club went just 1-11 this fall, concluding with a loss to Toledo earlier Friday.
The Lions fired special teams coordinator Joe Marciano earlier this month, and sources tell FootballScoop the organization is interested in bringing Bonamego back aboard.
Defensive backs coach Cory Hall has been appointed interim head coach amid a national search for Bonamego's replacement, which will be managed by DHR International.
