Kalen DeBoer to succeed Nick Saban at Alabama (Alabama)

Update >> The deal is done. DeBoer is heading to Tuscaloosa.

On Thursday, just a day after Nick Saban announced his retirement, we shared an update on the search at Alabama, and it continues to be a search moving at a rapid pace.

One by one the logical targets of Alabama's search from Dan Lanning to Steve Sarkisian to Mike Norvell have shared their intent to stay put with their current program, earning raises and new contracts in the process.

As the picture began to clear, all signs pointed to Washington's Kalen DeBoer.

ESPN reports today that DeBoer and Alabama are in negotiations for him to take over the Tide. Sources confirm that the two sides are working to an agreement.

Pete Thamel adds that, not surprisingly, Washington made a strong push to keep DeBoer even offering to double his current base salary of $4.2 million annually to put him among the top ten coaches in college football.

The Huskies head coach missed a scheduled radio appearance on Friday morning, leading to further speculation about his candidacy for the Tide's job.

He would bring an impressive resume to Tuscaloosa, where he'd inherit arguably the most decorated college football program of the last few decades.

At the small college level, DeBoer went 67-3 at Sioux Falls (NAIA), with three national titles and a runner-up finish leading the program from 2006-2009.

He would go on to be the offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois (FCS), Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Indiana before his first major college coaching head coaching opportunity at Fresno State.

In two seasons there he would go 12-6 overall before landing the Washington job heading into the 2022 season.

Since arriving in Seattle, he has taken home back-to-back Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, going 11-2 in his first season before their 14-0 run and Pac-12 title before losing to Michigan in the Pac-12 title game earlier this week.

A winner at every level, DeBoer carries a 104-12 mark as a head coach at the college level.
