Lane College finds new defensive coordinator in rising young coach Lewis (Tuskegee)

Coaching football, by nature, is a transient profession.

There are precious few guarantees, aside from the need to be willing to move for myriad reasons at a moment's notice.

Through the first several weeks of this year, Tommie Lewis Jr. has found out firsthand.

A former Alcorn State player who briefly returned to Fred McNair's staff at his alma mater earlier this year, Lewis has now accepted the role of defensive coordinator at NCAA Division II program Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee.

The move caps a whirlwind start to 2023 that's seen Lewis on staff at three different college football programs in the South.

Before his cameo on staff earlier this year at Alcorn, Lewis most recently had served as the defensive line coach and director of football operations for the Tuskegee Golden Tigers.

The 31-year-old Lewis also has previous experience as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Football Bowls Subdivision program Southern Mississippi, as well as a five-year run at Miles College and Southwestern Oklahoma.

Lane College is coming off an 5-5 campaign that included a 4-3 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Dragons have yet to release their 2023 schedule.
