Bo Pelini stopped being a Nebraska employee on Nov. 30, 2014, when the school fired him at the conclusion of a 9-3 regular season.
Fifty-one months later, he's finally off the Big Red's payroll.
Nebraska issued its final severance check to its former coach earlier this week, according to the Omaha World-Herald. As part of a contract originally signed on April 8, 2011 and extended in 2012 (twice) and 2014, Pelini was guaranteed to remain on Nebraska's payroll through today -- Feb. 28, 2019 -- at a cost of $150,000 a month.
Pelini took a job as Youngstown State's head coach almost immediately after at an annual salary of $214,000, which knocked Nebraska's obligation down to $128,000 a month.
All told, Nebraska paid Pelini $6.54 million to go away, according to the paper. That's on top of the $6.25 million it paid Mike Riley and the $762,000 it paid former AD Shawn Eichorst.
Incidentally, today is also Pelini's final day under contract at Youngstown State as well. He signed a 4-year deal upon returning to his hometown, which expires at the end of February. YSU AD Ron Strollo said earlier this month the school and the coach are on the "same page" in regards to getting Pelini a new deal, but no deal has been struck as of yet.
Pelini is 27-22 in four seasons at Youngstown State. After a Cinderalla run to the FCS title game in 2016, the Penguins have gone 6-5 and 4-7 over their past two seasons.
