LSU defensive line coach Jamar Cain is leaving to become the Denver Broncos' pass rush specialist, according to multiple reports on Saturday.
The 2022 campaign was Cain's first, and now only, season at LSU. Cain was also the Tigers' defensive run game coordinator.
“Jamar is an outstanding coach who has developed many players into elite defensive linemen during his coaching career,” Brian Kelly said upon his hiring. “He understands what it takes to be successful at the highest level of college football and he will bring great passion and energy to our program. In order to have sustained success in the SEC you have to win the line of scrimmage and Jamar’s coaching ability will be instrumental as we work to build a dominant defensive front.”
Cain joined the staff from Oklahoma, where he coached outside linebackers and defensive ends for the 2020-21 seasons. There, he was credited with developing Nik Bonitto into an All-American; in 2021, Bonitto registered seven sacks, 15 TFLs, nine hurries and three fumble recoveries -- numbers that also earned him Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. Incidentally, Bonitto now plays for the Broncos, joining the club last season as a second-round pick.
Cain played at Sacramento City College and New Mexico State, and coached edge defenders and/or defensive linemen at Missouri State, Cal Poly, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Fresno State and Arizona State before OU.
