The other day, Larry David (the co-creator of Seinfeld and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm) made waves on the Dan Patrick Show by saying that he could easily be an effective offensive coordinator, and when he was asked if he was kidding, he said stone-faced, "No, I'm not kidding."
On air, David explained: “Give me one season shadowing an offensive coordinator, just one season, and I know that I could do it. What could be so hard about it? You make up plays. Why is that so hard? I’m creative, in certain respects and I think that I can do that. I think I can.”
All he needed was a college or NFL program to come forward and offer to take him in for a year and let him learn a bit more before turning him loose.
Well after practice the other day, Mark Helfrich saw David's quote (probably during one of his numerous daily checks of the FootballScoop home page) and decided that Oregon was the perfect program to bring Larry David in for his one-year internship. So he formally issued an invite yesterday.
"We would like to welcome Larry David to come on out and shadow [offensive coordinator Matt] Lubick and dip his toe in the coaching waters."
"Larry, come on out. You're welcome to stay with me, although you can probably afford something better, but come on out."
David learning offensive football at Oregon actually makes a lot sense. Oregon is know in coaching circles as making their system very relateable to the players by using one word play calls and signals and play cards filled with pop culture references. What better place could there possibly be for David to learn the ins and outs of calling offensive plays?
I know I'm not alone in sitting here with my fingers crossed hoping the NCAA doesn't spoil the fun, allowing David to take them up on that offer, even if its only for a few days, or weeks. Having cameras there to catch David trying to learn, comprehend, and coach the Oregon offense would be highly entertaining.
