Mark Mangino will not return as Iowa State's offensive coordinator (Featured)

Paul Rhoads has relieved Iowa State offensive coordinator Mark Mangino of his duties, it was announced Monday morning.

Rhoads, oddly, told the media before informing his team, saying he wanted to "look them in the eye" and tell them at a 1:30 team meeting.

After reaching bowl games in three of his first four seasons, Rhoads's Cyclones are likely to compile their third straight losing season. One can see why he'd make a change under those circumstances.

However, his scapegoating of the offense is a bit... curious. Here are Iowa State's major offensive and defensive rankings since Rhoads's arrival in 2009:

The statistics tell a tidy story here. The Cyclones' slide has clearly coincided with the defense falling - sharply - off the cliff, while the offense has put together some of the best numbers of Rhoads' tenure.

Todd Sturdy will take over as offensive coordinator. Mangino's son Tommy will remain on staff as wide receivers coach. The Cyclones, 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the Big 12, also announced Joel Lanning will take over for Sam Richardson at quarterback.

Mangino isn't going away empty handed, however.
