Marshall backs out of bowl game due to loss of over 25 players to the portal (Sun Belt)

Charles Huff led the Marshall Thundering Herd to a remarkable 10-win season and Sun Belt title this season before the failure to come to terms on a contract extension led him to take the head coaching job at Southern Miss.

Following Huff's departure, well over 20 players hit the transfer portal, leaving Marshall's roster very thin as they prepared for their bowl game.

Now, it appears those still on the team won't get a chance to compete for that 11th win.

According to multiple reports, Marshall is backing out of their Independence Bowl date with Army due to their roster limitations.

The NCAA will now reportedly take a look at APR scores of teams that finished 5-7 to determine if a viable replacement can be found.

The COVID season aside, most will be hard pressed to recall a season where a team backed out a postseason appearance like this.

11-1 Army is also in the midst of a historic season as they square off against rival Navy today. The Independence Bowl is set to take place December 28th, in Shreveport Louisiana, so here's to hoping a new team can take Marshall's place.
