Maryland will announce the results from an investigation into the events leading to Jordan McNair's death on Friday, Sept. 21, the University System of Maryland announced Wednesday.
McNair, a Terps offensive lineman, collapsed after a supervised workout on May 29 and died on June 13. He was 19 years old.
Maryland president Wallace Loh announced on Aug. 14 that the school had commissioned concurrent investigations into the football program, one examining the events leading to McNair's death and whether proper protocol was followed after McNair's began to overheat, and a separate investigation into the football program's culture under head coach D.J. Durkin.
Loh also said Maryland accepted "legal and moral" responsibility for McNair's death. Terps strength coach Rick Court also resigned that same day, but was allowed to walk away with the bulk of his contract.
The McNair investigation had been handled by Walters, Inc. Maryland AD Damon Evans said on Aug. 14 that Walters had already found "the emergency response plan was not appropriately followed. Second, the care we provided was not consistent with best practices. And third, that heat illness was not properly identified or treated. Our athletic training staff did not take Jordan's temperature and did not apply cold water immersion treatment."
The USM board took over the McNair investigation three days later, as well as the separate investigation into the football program.
"The Board of Regents is committed to uncovering all the discoverable facts about Jordan McNair's tragic death, and separately, the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park," USM Board of Regents Chair James Brady said in a statement. "Once the board has the facts, we are committed to sharing what we find with the people of Maryland, and to making whatever decisions might be necessary and appropriate to best support our students."
The USM board will meet in a private session at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at Towson University in Baltimore, but the results of the investigation will be made public that afternoon.
Under interim head coach Matt Canada, Maryland is off to a 2-0 start to this season. The Terps host Temple on Saturday and host Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22.
