Mike Riley will not return as Nebraska's head coach, the program announced Saturday.
"Riley has brought professionalism and energy to the Nebraska football program, but unfortunately, those attributes have not translated to on-field success," AD Bill Moos said in a statement.
The move came after the Huskers concluded their regular season Friday with a 56-14 loss to Iowa, Nebraska's first bowl-less season since 2007 and the program's third such campaign since 1968.
Riley concluded his 3-year tenure at 19-19 overall and 12-14 in the Big Ten. This year's 4-8 mark was the program's worst since 1961, and also the first season with five home losses in 60 years.
Riley's departure has been widely expected since Sept. 21, when school administration pushed out AD Shawn Eichorst following the Huskers' home loss to Northern Illinois. That move was seen as a vote of no-confidence in Riley, since Eichorst stepped out on several limbs to hire Riley following the 2014 season, at the time coming off a 5-7 season at Oregon State.
The school hired Moos from Washington State to replace Eichorst in October. Moos will run the search for Riley's replacement.
Nebraska is the 11th FBS program to change head coaches this season, and the first Big Ten school.
