NAIA school makes head coaching change (greg ruffin)

Greg Ruffin is out as the head coach at Edward Waters College, one game into the program's spring season.

Edward Waters is an HBCU school in Jacksonville, Fla. The Tigers compete in NAIA.

The school has not announced the move -- β€œYou know I can’t talk about personnel issues" AD Paul Bryant told the Florida Times Union, who broke the story -- but Ruffin has been removed from the program's website and defensive coordinator Joseph Carter has been installed as interim head coach. Carter is in his first season with the program.

Ruffin's contract was set to expire at the end of the month.

Edward Waters opened its spring campaign with a 53-0 loss to Jackson State, Deion Sanders' debut with the Tigers -- a game best remembered nationally as the time Deion's stuff wasn't stolen.

The Tigers will play their first, and to date only, home game of the spring season against Erskine College on Saturday. They'll play two more games on March 20 and 27 before turning toward the fall.

Ruffin had been EWC's head coach for two seasons, going 4-7 in 2018 and 1-10 in 2019. The 1-10 record came against a purposefully challenging schedule -- including a game against SWAC member Southern -- as the school prepped for a possible move to Division II's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Carter joined the Edward Waters staff in May after spending a dozen seasons at Tuskegee as safeties coach and defensive coordinator.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
