Buried in a release about its name, image and likeness policy, the NCAA dropped some major news on Tuesday night. The organization has extended Mark Emmert's contract to remain as president through Dec. 31, 2025. He was previously under contract through 2023.
The announcement was not accompanied by a quote, just a simple statement of fact in between news about its work on gender equity issues and a new meeting structure in the post-COVID world.
The nature of the NCAA's presidential role is to take arrows so the college presidents don't have to, and Emmert has taken plenty. He faced a renewed round of criticism last month when it was revealed the NCAA prepared its women's basketball tournament with far fewer resources than the men's version.
Hired away after stints as the UConn, LSU and Washington president, Emmert has served as NCAA president since 2010. His tenure is already the longest since Walter Byers's 38-year run atop the organization from 1951-88.
