After three rounds of chemotherapy to treat throat cancer which forced him to stay away from solid food for months, Nebraska outside linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt shared during a radio appearance last night that a recent scan revealed "there's no cancer left" in his body.
Originally scheduled to get just under 40 radiation treatments, Dewitt shared that he expects to eventually make a full recovery, and that road starts with a few more weeks of therapy and unique massages he will have to go through. Dewitt adds that he believes he'll be able to "live and long and normal life."
"I'm in the process of going through different therapies - occupational therapy, speech therapy - and I've got to get these lymphatic massages until the lymphatic fluid gets flushed from my body because my face is pretty swollen right now," Dewitt shared, according to the Journal Star.
With both his health and spirits on the mend, Dewitt lost about 100 pounds since originally being diagnosed and credits his support system, led by his wife and kids and extending to current and former players and fellow Huskers coaches, as bright spots during this tough time.
The Journal Star points out that it will be a bit before Dewitt, who also coaches the Huskers special teams, is back full-go, but he plans to be around the Huskers camps during the next month or so, as much as his recovery will allow him to be, with the goal to be healthy as possible when the team reports for fall camp.
