Less than a week after losing defensive coordinator Tony White to the same post at Florida State, Matt Rhule has found his new defensive coordinator.
He didn't have to look far, as he was already part of the defensive staff.
Pete Thamel shares today that John Butler is being promoted to the Huskers defensive coordinator spot.
Butler joined the staff in the spring and serves as the team's secondary coach / pass game coordinator.
With three decades of coaching experience, Butler has spent 20 seasons in college football and another 10 in the NFL.
He came to Nebraska after six seasons with the Buffalo Bills, working initially as the defensive backs coach before adding the role of pass game coordinator in his final two seasons.
He also brings Big Ten play calling experience as Bill O'Brien's defensive coordinator at Penn State in 2012 and 2013.
Butler has also spent time coordinating special teams with stops in the Big Ten (Minnesota), SEC (South Carolina) as well the Ivy League (Harvard) and Group of Five level (Texas State).
Thamel also adds that longtime Rhule assistant Phil Snow is joining the staff as associate head coach as the two have previously worked together at Temple, Baylor and the Carolina Panthers.
Also, Kansas City Chiefs assistant defensive line coach Terry Bradden is set to be the school's new defensive line coach after eight seasons with franchise, Thamel adds.
The Huskers new look defensive staff will now consist of Butler (DC), Phil Snow (associate HC), Bradden (DL) and Phil Simpson (OLBs), who recently rejoined the Huskers after a season on staff at Florida State as a defensive analyst.
