Just a few years ago, Robert Steeples made the rare jump from high school to the NFL after rebuilding his alma mater before joining the LSU staff.
An AFCA 35 Under 35 selection, Steeples coached the corners under Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge last season, but was part of the defensive restructuring Kelly decided to do back in January that overhauled the defensive side of the ball.
Last night, Bruce Feldman shared that Steeples has found a soft landing spot with Matt Campbell at Iowa State.
The report shares that the former 3-year NFL player is expected to join the Cyclones where he will use his defensive acumen to help the Cyclones on the offensive side of the ball as an analyst, the report adds.
Widely regarded as one of the top promising young coaches in college football, Steeples made the unprecedented jump from coaching high school to the NFL in 2021 after quickly rebuilding his alma mater at De Smet Jesuit HS (Creve Coeur, MO) into a powerhouse in just four seasons.
He took De Smet from 2-8 in his first season in 2016 to a state championship in 2019.
In his final three seasons at De Smet, Steeples went 29-4, which included an impressive 20-game winning streak and back-to-back appearances in the state title game. In addition to the head coaching duties, Steeples also served as defensive coordinator and his unit allowed just over 9 points per game during his final two seasons with the program.
