A look back, and a look ahead: The Auburn staff (look back)

As January comes to a close, and new head coaches finalize their staffs heading into the 2021 seasons, we wanted to provide a look back at the previous staff, as well as a way to look ahead at a recap of the new additions.

Think of this new series as the coaching version of the popular recent trend of "How it started vs. How it's going," everyone was sharing not long ago.

Back in mid-December, Auburn announced the decision to dismiss Gus Malzahn after eight seasons and a 68-35 mark on The Plains. Malzahn's contract calls for him to receive buyout of buyout of $21.5 million.

After a process that included some big names in college football, Bryan Harsin was hired away from Boise State and announced as the Tigers new head coach on December 22nd. Harsin made $1.85 million annually at Boise State, and when terms are revealed of his new deal at Auburn that will surely see a significant bump.

Harsin brought a few key coaches with him from Boise State, and also scored a bit of a coup by grabbing Mike Bobo and Will Friend from South Carolina, where Shane Beamer had initially decided to retain Bobo and Friend had just recently joined the Gamecocks staff.

For his defensive coordinator spot, Harsin was able to land former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason, who will bring some key SEC experience and recruiting ties with him.

Harsin also brought Tracy Rocker over from South Carolina to coach the defensive line, but recent reports share that he may be heading to Philadelphia as the Eagles defensive line coach.

Anticipating Rocker's departure for the NFL, the defensive line spot is the lone remaining job open on the staff currently.

The lone holdover from Gus Malzahn's staff was Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, who will continue to coach the running backs.

Here is a look back at the Auburn staff under Malzahn, as well as the new additions under Harsin.
