How closely do you think these two logos resemble each other?
vs.

Iowa felt Southern Miss' eagle head logo was too similar to its own Hawkeye head, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office agreed, ruling in 2011 by a 2-1 margin that Southern Miss's mark was too similar to Iowa's.
So it was time for the Golden Eagles to go back to the drawing board. Again.
On Wednesday, Southern Miss unveiled a new mark, hopefully for the last time.

The new logo is sleeker, more aggressive, and less trademark offensive than Southern Miss's previous look.
"To see this identity come to life, especially on game day when it’s on the field or on the court and seeing it on the coaches and athletes and in the stands, that’s when we really love what we do," Rodney Richardson, a Hattiesburg, Miss., graphic designer who created the new logo, told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. "When it’s been built the right way and people see it and say, 'Yes, this represents what we’re about.' Then we know we’ve done something right."
