Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to retire (kevin steele)

Kevin Steele plans to retire after 40 years in coaching, according to a report Monday from ESPN's Chris Low.

Steele, 66, spent 2023 as Alabama's defensive coordinator. He was also Nick Saban's original defensive coordinator in 2007-08.

The former Furman and Tennessee linebacker entered coaching as a student assistant with the Vols in 1980 and spent the next 44 years in the game.

He would go on to coach at New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, the Carolina Panthers, Baylor, Florida State, Clemson, LSU, Auburn and Miami. Steele coordinated defenses for Clemson, LSU, Auburn and Miami in addition to Alabama, and spent 1999-2002 as the head coach at Baylor.
