More than two months after he took the job, we have details of a Kalen DeBoer contract.
The new Alabama head coach signed an 8-year deal that starts at $10 million and tops out at $11.75 million, AD Greg Byrne said Monday. Those were, at press time, the only details released by Byrne.
Amazingly, but not necessarily surprisingly, DeBoer's 8-figure salary represents a cost savings for Alabama (plus the $12 million buyout to leave Washington). Nick Saban earned $11.1 million in 2023, and would've made more in 2024. The six remaining years on his contract paid out a total of $71.8 million, an average of $11.97 million per year.
DeBoer earned $4.2 million in salary at Washington in 2023. Washington was reportedly willing to double his salary in the second of two extensions ultimately offered to DeBoer as the Huskies completed an undefeated run to the national championship game, but that still left Washington well short of the Tide.
Alabama is set to spend $10.05 million on DeBoer's staff; Saban's staff earned $9.17 million in '23. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is set to average $1.7 million over the life of a 3-year contract, while co-defensive coordinator Maurice Linguist signed a 2-year deal averaging $900,000 a year. Strength coach David Ballou netted a $225,000 raise to $950,000.
