Arizona Cardinals admit to tampering in making Jonathan Gannon hire (Jonathan Gannon)

College football and the NFL play the same sport, but they operate in entirely different worlds.

Another reminder came Thursday, when the Arizona Cardinals admitted to tampering in their hiring of head coach Jonathan Gannon.

General manager Monti Ossenfort had a phone conversation with Gannon following the Philadelphia Eagles' NFC championship win, while Gannon was still employed as the Eagles defensive coordinator. The call came during a no-contact period, as part of the NFL's anti-tampering policy.

To make the Eagles whole for the violation, the clubs swapped third-round picks in this year's draft; the Eagles will move up 28 spots on Friday night, while Arizona will also receive Philly's fifth-round pick in Saturday's portion of the draft.

Remember: This wasn't Arizona trying to steal Philadelphia's head coach. If Arizona did that, while he was under contract and while his season was still going, the Cardinals' punishment would be staggering.

And yet, in college football, head coaches leave their teams and their contracts for other schools with bowl games still to play every single year.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
