Arizona State will self-impose a bowl ban for the 2023 season, AD Ray Anderson announced Sunday.
The NCAA is in the midst of investigating the Sun Devils' football program for allegedly hosting high school recruits during the COVID-19 recruiting dead period.
βIn light of the ongoing investigation and our membership obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the matter, we will not be commenting further at this time," Anderson said.
Occurring under the regime of head coach Herm Edwards, the investigation resulted in three assistant coaches going on administrative leave prior to the 2021 season. Five more assistants left or were fired before the 2022 season, and Edwards was fired on Sept. 18, 2022.
Kenny Dillingham is now the Sun Devils' head coach, and the staff brought in 51 new players (31 transfers) ahead of this season.
For what it's worth, Arizona State's over/under is placed at 4.5 wins, so those who make their livings on such things see ASU's move as a moot point in the long run.
Arizona State's schedule includes Oklahoma State and defending Mountain West champion Fresno State in non-conference play, plus No. 6 USC, No. 10 Washington No. 14 Utah, and No. 15 Oregon in Pac-12 play. Arizona State opens its season Thursday versus Southern Utah.
