Asked about his future at Akron, Joe Moorhead shrugs and mentions "lack of resources"

Akron won three of their last five games to finish with 4 wins on the year.

Last night, against a Toledo squad that always seems to be in the mix for a shot at the MAC title, Joe Moorhead's Akron squad played arguably their best game of his tenure in a 21-14 overtime win.

After winning two games in each of his first two seasons, the former Penn State and Oregon offensive coordinator has led the Zips to four wins his third year leading the team.

While improvement on-the-field has clearly been demonstrated, as the Zips created some positive momentum in winning three of their last five games, the fact remains that Moorhead is 8-28 and plenty of administrations would use that as a reason to make a change after three years.

Complicating matters a bit is there has been significant leadership changes at Akron since Moorhead was hired. Back in November, athletic director Charles Guthrie and the school mutually agreed to part ways and a new school president was also been brought in recently.

Asked about the changes in athletic leadership and how that may weigh into his job security and willingness to stick around after their win over the Rockets last night, Moorhead was ultimately asked if he intends to return next fall.

"Well, I see my future being walking out of this room and going into my office where I've got about 15 family and friends and enjoying the heck out of this win. Watch our kids be excited about everything, and then we'll come in and work forward for next year."

Widely considered one of the best playcallers in college football, as evidenced from his time at programs like Oregon and Penn State combined with his SEC head coaching experience (Mississippi State) and having been the subject of NFL interest previously, Moorhead was asked what his coaching future looks like.

In his response to that question, he called out Akron's commitment to provide adequate resources to compete consistently.

"What I've learned enough in this business is you never say never. I don't have a crystal ball, I'm just excited about what we've been able to do, and come in here despite the resources - or lack thereof - that we are provided, that we have been able to fight, and scratch, and claw and first become incredibly competitive, and now find a way to win."

"To me, I control what I can control, and that's to come in everyday and bust my ass and give this team and this program everything that I've got, and I demand the same from our players, and that's how we will continue to grow this thing."
