Former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason, who rose to acclaim as defensive coordinator at Stanford, is expected to become Bryan Harsin's defensive coordinator at Auburn University, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday night to FootballScoop. The hiring, pending background checks and final authorizations, is expected to be complete this week.
Mason was fired in late-November from Vanderbilt after seven seasons in Nashville, during which time he went 27-55 and advanced into the postseason multiple times.
Mason's known for his defensive acumen, rising as a star on the Stanford Cardinal defensive staff a decade ago before being hired to replace James Franklin at Vanderbilt.
Sources tell FootballScoop multiple other Power 5 programs sought Mason's services over the past month.
On the offensive side of the ball, sources tell FootballScoop Harsin is looking to make a strong move as well.
